A 61-year-old man died overnight after a struggle with an alleged carjacker in the French Quarter ended with him being pinned by his vehicle, New Orleans police said Friday.

The New Orleans Police Department are investigating the man's death as a homicide as of early morning Friday. It was initially reported as a traffic fatality.

At about 8:37 p.m. Thursday, the man was on Bienville and Burgundy streets when the suspect tried to steal his car. During the struggle, the man's car rolled over and pinned him underneath the vehicle, police said. The suspect fled the scene, according to NOPD.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police did not release any more information about the man's death.
