NEW YORK (PIX11) – The 2025 hurricane season has officially entered uncharted territory.
Late Thursday night, a system spinning over the far North Atlantic strengthened into Subtropical Storm Karen, an astonishing development in one of the least likely regions on Earth for tropical formation.
Karen’s birthplace, sitting near 44°N latitude, is typically home to icy waters and relentless wind shear — both natural enemies of tropical development.
Yet, against all odds, this storm managed to form and organize into a named subtropical system.
That makes it the furthest north-forming tropical system in the Atlantic since 1952, according to Michael Ferragamo, a hurricane researcher from Oklahoma State University.
