This week’s shooting death in Ginoogaming First Nation is symptomatic of a much larger drug epidemic, say First Nations leaders, which is why Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) is declaring a state of emergency across the Treaty 5 and 9 territories to address the flow of illegal drugs and deaths in communities.
“Our leadership over the last two-and-a-half days have instructed us to make this declaration and also to create a plan in partnership with our treaty partners, Ontario and Canada, and to make sure what has been talked about here are just not words on a page, but actions on the ground in our communities,” said NAN Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler.
