WASHINGTON —
A federal judge has temporarily halted President Donald Trump's plan to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago, citing constitutional concerns.
The temporary restraining order is set to last for at least two weeks, but the pause could potentially be extended after a follow-up telephone hearing on Oct. 22.
In the meantime, hundreds of National Guard troops from Texas, who started arriving in Illinois earlier this week, are in legal limbo.
U.S. District Judge April Perry found that the deployment violated the Constitution, specifically the 10th Amendment, which grants states specific powers, and the 14th Amendment, which assures due process and equal protection under the law.
