PLACER COUNTY, Calif. —
The Placer County Sheriff's Office is actively enforcing e-bike regulations and educating riders to prevent dangerous or illegal activities. It comes as e-bike accidents in California have increased more than 18 times from 2018 to 2023 , according to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.
In late September, over a three-day period , Placer County conducted 183 stops among riders, some involving groups, which led to 30 citations and 25 e-motorcycles being towed.
Placer County officials noted that in most encounters, riders were aware of the laws and classifications but chose not to follow them.
A gray area exists for those operating e-bikes that exceed 30 mph, as they could be classified as mopeds or motorcycles, requiring an off-highway identificat
