Tensions between Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and the Navajo Nation Council are reaching a boiling point after Nygren appointed an interim Controller — twice — to replace the one who resigned. The council deemed the moves unlawful.

Nygren abruptly issued a memo on Oct. 7 congratulating Robert Willie for his appointment as interim controller, effective that evening. The following day, Nygren announced on his Facebook page that Alva R. Tom had been named interim controller instead. The Navajo Nation Council said neither action was legal and were not recognized by the council.
