Arizona State University has officially opened a long-awaited research, development and prototyping hub for semiconductor technology.
The so-called "materials-to-fab" center is designed to accelerate the transfer of technology breakthroughs from university labs to semiconductor factories. It is a joint effort with Applied Materials, the country's largest producer of chips manufacturing equipment.
The company will bring pieces of its manufacturing equipment — each worth millions of dollars — into the center to support research efforts. Students and faculty will use the machines for hands-on learning and technology development.
