Twice Des Moines Public Schools Associate Superintendent Matt Smith has stepped into the role of interim superintendent during a time of crisis, receiving a two-year contract after the immigration arrest of Ian Roberts.
Smith first took after long-time, former-Superintendent Tom Ahart announced in February 2022 he would leave after he came under fire for his handling of DMPS at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the midst of the transition , tragedy struck when two then-East High School students and one former pupil were shot outside the school on March 7.
