Some of the best flamenco performers in the world are in North Texas for the 10-day-long Texas Flamenco Festival.

“So Flamenco is not just a dance, it is a genre of music,” Flamenco Fever Executive Director Julia Alcántara said. “It’s a 500-year-old art form dating back to the Spanish Inquisition.”

That’s when Moors, Jewish, and Roma peoples were exiled from society to Southern Spain because they were not Catholic. Those merged cultures are the base of flamenco.

“So it is a cathartic art. These people blended their music and song styles together to make themselves feel better,” Alcántara said. “It’s a healing art, and that’s why we think it’s so important to share with the world.”
