AUSTIN (KXAN) -- It's been a big week for bird migration, and Central Texas has been part of it.
More than a billion birds were recorded as being on the move Wednesday night as they fly south for the winter. It was the highest night of bird migration ever recorded by BirdCast.
According to BirdCast, 1.25 billion birds were recorded migrating south the night of Oct. 8, 2025. It was only the third night in the bird migration tracker's history that more than a billion birds were recorded to be on the move in one night.
The other nights that broke a billion were Sept. 25, 2025, and Oct. 6, 2023.
Travis County witnessed a high number of birds in flight that night, too. According to BirdCast's migration dashboard, 4,503,600 birds crossed Travis County on Wednesday night. More than 1,073,000
