McEwen, Tennessee: A blast in rural Tennessee that levelled an explosives plant and was felt for kilometres left no survivors, authorities said on Saturday.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said during a news conference that officials were working on the assumption that all of the people at the site were dead. The total number of people who died was unclear, as was the cause of the blast.
“We’ve recovered no survivors,” Davis, who had previously said there were 18 people missing, said.
The explosion happened about 7.45am on Friday at Accurate Energetic Systems, which supplies and researches explosives for the military.
He said it was one of the worst scenes he had ever seen and especially gut-wrenching because he knows three families connected to the tragedy.
