WalletHub has ranked all 50 U.S. states based on how safe it is to live there. They used 52 indicators in five main areas, including personal/home safety, financial factors, emergency preparedness, road safety and workplace safety.

Mississippi was the second least safe in the country.

A low ranking doesn't necessarily mean you're in more danger of, say, being assaulted. In this case, it's showing residents are at a higher risk of something bad happening without support to prevent harm. Think of it like a balcony without a guardrail.
