COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio University professor was among more than 140 people detained Wednesday by Israeli forces after their flotilla bound for Gaza was intercepted, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition .
According to the Associated Press , 145 activists from across the globe were aboard several boats carrying humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, when they were taken into custody by the Israeli military.
One of those on board was Thomas Hayes, a professor in the film school at Ohio University.
“It was really shocking finding out that he was taken prisoner and I’m honestly really worried about him,” said Jonna Lutz, a senior film student.
Students and colleagues described Hayes as a respected teacher and an advocate for Palestinian rights.
