The day commemorating Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas is coming up soon. Other cities and states will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
Columbus Day, which some communities have renamed Indigenous Peoples Day to protest the historical conquest of North America by the Europeans while raising awareness of the losses suffered by Native Americans, will take place on Monday, Oct. 13.
The day, which is marked on the second Monday of October each year, is one of 11 federal holidays the United States government recognizes. It is also a day when some businesses and federal facilities will be closed in observance.
