Too often we look at mining as a pro or con activity — you're either for or against it.

But in a recently released book titled 'The Price of Gold: Mining, Pollution and Resistance' being launched at the Prince of Wales Heritage Museum on Oct. 16, authors John Sandlos and Arn Keeling show through their 10-year study of Giant Mine that people from both sides of the fence joined forces in an attempt to encourage lawmakers to reduce the environmental and sometimes deadly human impacts of the mine. Sadly, to little avail.

Corporate greed and inadequate regulations led to death and environmental destruction and most of all, pushed the Dene from their land. It was colonialism at its worst and it happened right here in the mining sector.
