CASS COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) - A man with a long history of being a convicted felon will spend the next several years — possibly even the next decade — in prison for stealing a walnut tree in Cass County.

Prosecutors say Trevor Wallace was sentenced on Friday to 38 months (three years + two months) to 10 years for stealing an extremely valuable, fully mature, hardwood walnut tree that held a significant dollar value.

Wallace was found with the tree at a lumber yard on Dec. 21, 2024 — several days after the tree was taken from a rural home in Cass County.

On the morning of his jury trial , prosecutors say Wallace pleaded guilty to larceny over $1,000, which was his habitual third offense.

Wallace is expected to be transferred by Cass County police to the Michigan Department of Corrections
