A fire in a Farmington apartment complex has left 23 families temporarily homeless and resulted in three hospitalizations.

The Farmington Public Safety Department was dispatched to the Farmington Plaza Apartments, in the area of Shiawassee Street and Orchard Lake Road, at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.

Officers arrived to find fire in first- and second-floor apartments and requested assistance from the Farmington Hills Fire Department.

Initial crews extinguished the fire in the units but found the blaze had spread to the roof, Public Safety Chief Bob Houhanisin said.

Three tenants were taken to hospitals. As of Friday, two had been released and the third was expected to be released soon, Houhanisin said.
