GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - North Carolina health officials have reported the first flu-related death of the 2025–26 season, marking an early reminder of the “triple threat” posed by influenza, COVID-19 and RSV as respiratory virus season begins.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) said the patient was an adult from the eastern part of the state. No additional information about the person’s age or underlying health conditions was released in order to protect the family’s privacy.

Officials say the early death highlights the importance of staying up to date on vaccinations and taking preventive measures before virus activity peaks later this fall and winter.
