MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WETM)---Animal shelters around the area are full of more animals coming in than going out.
Shelter organizers say the issue stems from a combination of rising pet surrenders and a decline in adoptions.
"Around the country, we're seeing more and more people feeling that it's necessary to surrender pets to shelters because they're finding that the cost of pet care is challenging, they're finding, given the economic uncertainty," said Georgie Taylor, the Executive Director of Humane Society Schuyler County.
Shelters around the area have had to put multiple animals in one area so they can make room for the large number of animals coming in.
"Right now we have about 28 dogs and probably 90-something cats and kittens, so definitely over our capacity," said Georgie.
