WYNOT, Neb. (KTIV) — Students at Wynot Public Schools celebrated on Friday after collecting more than 16,000 plastic bags during September’s “plastic bag challenge,” an initiative designed to help homeless individuals across Nebraska.

The month-long collection drive challenged all elementary and middle school students to gather plastic bags that will be transformed into sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. The seventh-grade class emerged as the winner, but all participating students were rewarded with a pizza party on Friday afternoon.

“We went around town and asked people that doesn’t have grandkids that come here, and they let us get some of their bags. We just want to help the homeless and people who need things,” said 6th-grade student Macie Koch.
