BANGOR, Maine — October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and as the number of daylight hours shrink and darker commutes set in, safety officials across Maine are urging drivers and pedestrians to stay alert after a deadly year on the state’s roads.
According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, pedestrians accounted for 14 percent of all traffic deaths in the state over the past four years.
Maine State Police Sgt. Taylor Dube 20 of Maine’s 135 fatal crashes so far this year have involved people walking.
One of the most notable incidents happened this summer in Albion, where two young children were killed in a hit-and-run crash.
