MAINE, USA — After years of decline, Maine’s Department of Education is working on revamping its teaching approach by going ‘back to basics.’

Maine DOE announced it would create resources and advisories to improve reading and mathematics education in the state. This approach focuses primarily on ‘evidence-based’ education styles that have become popular and successful in other states.

This approach comes after many years of declining education scores in Maine, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress or NAEP.

From 1992 to 2017, NAEP reported that Maine math scores, represented by the dark blue line, were statistically significantly higher than the national average.
