LENNOX, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Did you know that in the state of South Dakota, unlike police or fire services, emergency medical services are not required by state law?

This means many EMS services operate on a tightrope, relying on help from volunteers, local contracts, and a heavy burden on city budgets.

For years, the City of Lennox has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars providing emergency services to people in the area.

City officials are hoping a tax, approved by the voters, will keep these services alive for decades.

“We’re at the mercy of the city council in deciding whether or not they’re going to support the areas outside of Lennox,” Alan Perry, the Director of EMS for Lennox Area Ambulance, said.
