CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) -- The last living World War II veteran in Cheatham County passed away earlier this week at the age of 101.

Arnold "Dutch" Simpkins died on Wednesday, Oct. 8. In addition to being a soldier, he was also a dedicated husband and father.

"We were very blessed to have such a good and gracious man. He was humble, he was compassionate, and he was very wise," Arnold's son, Steve Simpkins, told News 2.

In 1943, Arnold joined the U.S. Army as a teenager and fought in WWII.

"He drove supplies and fuel and equipment to the soldiers...drove up to the front line to drop off fuel and stuff like that," Steve explained. "He talked about stories of walking through bombed out houses."
