MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - The 19-year-old University of Utah student who was detained by ICE after a traffic stop in Mesa County earlier this year is part of a lawsuit suing the federal agency.
The federal lawsuit filed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado (ACLU) listed Caroline Dias Goncalves as one of four plaintiffs. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, acting Director of ICE Todd Lyons and ICE Director of the Denver Field Office Robert Guadian were named defendants in the case.
Goncalves was detained by ICE on June 5 after a traffic stop made by Mesa County deputy Alexander Zwinck, who told the 19-year-old she was following too closely to a semitruck. She told Zwinck she is traveling from Utah to visit a friend in Colorado. The deputy
