Communities across Western Alaska, including Nome and Kotzebue, are preparing for more coastal flooding and heavy rainfall as another strong storm system moves into the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning in effect from Sunday through Monday, with winds expected to reach 50 miles per hour and gusts up to 70 mph. Forecasters warn of continued threats to low-lying coastal areas that have already seen damage from recent storms.

In Nome, City Manager Lee Smith says crews are actively monitoring vulnerable spots and documenting the condition of beaches and ports ahead of the storm.

“We’re videoing beaches and ports within two miles of Nome… so if there’s damage, we can compare before and after,” said Smith.
