CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A local pilot has returned home after completing a record-setting flight circling the Atlantic to raise awareness about eradicating polio worldwide.
Peter Teahen, alongside his co-pilot and fellow Rotary Club International member Ed Galkin, embarked on the journey starting on August 30th. They flew in a 1976 single-engine Cessna. The duo traveled more than 8,000 miles, stopping along the way to discuss the importance of ending polio globally.
They encountered a significant challenge during the trip when a fuel pump malfunctioned en route to Greenland.
"The pump was not pumping fuel from the bladder to the wing as was expected," Teahen said. "After I crawled in the back...to try to fix it, we found out the only way we're gonna fix this to go back to Goose Bay."
