With the assistance of a medical team in Chicago, a toddler who was severely injured in a crash and given just days to live overcame the biggest obstacle.

Earlier this year, Oliver Staub and his family were on vacation in Mexico when a truck hit their minivan. Of those hurt, the two-year-old's injuries were the most severe.

"I removed him very carefully," said Oliver's father, Stefan Staub. "I felt in the neck there was something not okay."

Then came the grim news from doctors.

"They told us already he would be forever paralyzed," Oliver's parents said. "He has a complete fracture of spinal cord, and he is brain dead."

They talked about donating Oliver's organs and planning his funeral.
