George Wythe High School’s youthful football team is maturing and the Maroons showed some serious moxie on Friday night.

GW rallied from a 13-point third-quarter deficit and successfully defended a potential game-tying two-point conversion in the final moments to record a 28-26 Mountain Empire District road win over the Grayson County Blue Devils.

David Mitchell of Grayson caught a touchdown pass from Maverik Goad with 29.7 seconds remaining, but the ensuing two-point try failed as the pass was incomplete.

“We did a tremendous job and played great pass defense during that time,” said George Wythe coach Brandon Harner. “Honestly, our defense played well the entire night. They had four or five plays they got us on, but we played really well against a good defense.
