Four people were killed and at least 12 were injured in an early Saturday morning shooting in Leland.

Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News the shooting happened around midnight on one of the city’s main streets as people were in town for Leland High School’s homecoming. The shooting did not happen on campus, according to Lee.

Four of the injured people were airlifted to hospitals for treatment. While the injury count has not been confirmed by law enforcement, WAPT-TV reported that state Sen. Derrick Simmons, who represents Leland, said a total of 20 people were shot.

The Leland Police Department told SuperTalk Mississippi News it is unable to provide any further information at this time. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the case.
