Ohio - For 70 years, the Ohio Turnpike has connected residents and businesses across the state.

According to the Ohio Turnpike website, the plans for the super highway were originally spurred on by the post-WWII economic boom and popularization of the motorcar. Ground was broken on October 27, 1952, and after only 35 months, the 241-mile-long project was complete.

Brian Newbacher, an Ohio Turnpike Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) Public Information Officer, says that at one point over 10,000 workers were actively building the road, which stretched across 4 major rivers and over 35 smaller streams.

The completion of the Turnpike connected several major cities across the state, providing much easier access to them than the smaller roads that existed before.
