BOSTON —

Saturday marked the 49th annual Boston 10K for Women.

More than 5,500 women registered for the autumn classic, and the course brought runners through Boston's Back Bay and into Cambridge.

The mission is to bring health and wellness opportunities to women and children in need.

"My mother has been involved for 25-plus years," one organizer said.

Racers of all ages joined in on the fun.

"I'm probably going to do this again and eventually get better," a young racer said.

Established in 1977 as the Bonne Bell Mini Marathon, the Boston 10K for Women is the longest-running all-women’s sporting event in New England.

The race was headlined by an elite field, including Emily Sisson, who holds the American women's marathon record.
