Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti absolutely lost his cool yelled at officials, and he had every right to be irate. As his No. 7 Indiana Hoosiers were on the road against the No. 3 Oregon Ducks on Saturday, Cignetti went on the field and flipped out at the refs, who seemingly swallowed their whistles on what looked like clear pass interference.
Let's back up. About midway through the second quarter of Saturday's game in Eugene, Indiana was facing third-and-1 from its own 34-yard line. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza attempted a pass to wide receiver Elijah Sarratt, but it was incomplete.
BAD OFFICIATING: Refs overturned a huge Jeremiah Smith catch, and Ohio State fans were livid
Cignetti's objection — which was surely shared by Hoosiers fans everywhere — was because Oregon defensive back Brandon Finney Jr. appeared to commit a very obvious pass interference penalty. But no flag was thrown, as officials disagreed. Even the CBS broadcast was stunned over the no-call because it looked "like he was draped all over [Sarratt]."
So naturally, Cignetti lost it.
"You can't let that go," Cignetti told CBS Sports at halftime.
Hard to blame Cignetti or anyone angry over this call. Officials ultimately gave him a sideline warning for the on-field tantrum, rather than a 15-yard penalty. But that's gotta sting for Indiana, which ultimately punted on the drive.
Poor officiating at its finest.
