Greek mythology holds that Calliope, the goddess of eloquence and epic poetry, is considered the chief of the Muses.

She was the one to whom writers — such as me — would hopefully invoke for inspiration. Supposedly, she inspired writers like Homer (not Simpson) to write epic narratives such as the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey” for English classes to study forever.

For writers of today (me?) the “writing muse” is more of a personal concept.

I’ve never been inspired to write my version of the “Iliad” (perhaps the Silliad with a comic touch). My wonderful Twoey, Lucy’s predecessor, was my muse for 17 years as his antics and actions spurred ideas. Lucy is mostly just a “love sponge” who occasionally tumbles me into an idea.
