Army's bounce-back from consecutive setbacks and a 1-3 start can be traced to the Black Knights ' improved play as a defensive unit.

Over the past two wins against Alabama-Birmingham and Charlotte , the Black Knights' primary starters have allowed just one touchdown — the backups did surrender last-minute touchdowns in each contest.

In Saturday's 24-7 win over the 49ers, Army held Charlotte to 11 first downs and a mere 178 yards, or 3.2 yards per play. That was the best defensive showing since limiting FCS member Bucknell to 175 yards (or 3.4 per play) in a 2021 victory, and the last time that occurred vs. a FBS member was in a 2020 victory over Navy at Michie Stadium when the Midshipmen managed only 117 yards (or 2.8 per play).
