DES MOINES, Iowa —
Domestic violence can happen to anybody. Any gender, any race, any socioeconomic background. And a new report says the number of people dying from domestic violence has jumped dramatically since 2021.
According to the report from the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which uses data from the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the number of deaths from domestic violence jumped 52% between 2021 and 2024.
Breaking that down on a year-by-year basis, 22 people died in 2022, 30 died in 2023, and 35 died in 2024.
But the coalition's community engagement director, Lindsay Pingel, says those numbers don't paint the full picture.
