Last year in May, when Ramjit Yadav, a man accused of killing his wife, walked out of UP 's Azamgarh jail on bail, he took with him the jail's chequebook. Within months, he stole Rs 30 lakh, from the prison's bank account operated by jail superintendent Aditya Kumar Singh, reports Rajeev Dikshit. The con came to light when the officer spotted a suspicious withdrawal of Rs 2.6 lakh in September. Probe revealed it had the help of jail staff, and an inmate, who forged the signature. Yadav is now absconding.
