CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Female veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War took off from Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Saturday morning for the region’s first all-female Honor Flight .
The free trip will bring the veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit service memorials before returning home Sunday.
Crowds gathered at the airport to cheer on and honor the women before departure, showing widespread support for their service.
The veterans served in eras from the Cold War to Desert Storm, including the Korean and Vietnam wars. People in attendance met one another and talked logistics ahead of the trip.
Each veteran is traveling with a guardian, many of whom also served.
