WILKES-BARRE — Everybody loves the long ball. Throughout the duration of his legendary career, Babe Ruth was happy to oblige.
Baseball’s most beloved historical figure hit 714 homers in his major league career, but one blast that came outside of his days with the Yankees has earned its place in local lore. On Saturday, dozens of people came together to honor the Babe in a fitting manner: by crushing home runs.
Brian Hontz and Cassidy Bicking were each double winners in the second annual Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby, held at Kirby Park by Visit Luzerne County and the City of Wilkes-Barre.
A commemorative kiosk located within Kirby Park marks the spot where a titanic home run hit by Ruth landed way back in 1926, when he was playing in an off-season game in nearby Artillery Park
