Stepping foot on the ice of Mill Bay’s Kerry Park Arena on Saturday, where 12-year-old Xavier Rasul Jankovics should have been playing, his grieving family was surrounded with support from loud banging sticks, and friendly faces.
His big brother, 14-year-old Qais, dropped the puck to start the weekend hockey tournament now named in Xavier’s honour after he was tragically killed on Aug. 25.
“Xavier grew up in this arena from when he was three-years-old. So it’s really special that they named the tournament after him, and that they are remembering him this way,” said Xavier’s mother Zahra Rasul.
“To drop the puck in memory of my brother was also heartwarming,” said Xavier’s brother, Qais Rasul-Jankovics.
