BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The shores of Deer Island played host to a weekend full of adventure, learning, and camaraderie, courtesy of a Boy Scout troop out of Jackson.

Troop 1 out of St. James Episcopal Church made the journey from Jackson for a camp-in on the island, getting an escape into nature and learning life skills in the process.

Amid the government shutdown, the troop had to pivot from Davis Bayou Campground in Ocean Springs, but still spent their weekend fishing, kayaking and camping.

Around 50 Boy Scouts got the chance to earn merit badges while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

Troop leaders say it’s not just a weekend of fun, but preparation for life.
