The Albanese government is “scrambling” to get a critical minerals deal with the United States despite Australia “holding some of the aces”, the federal Coalition has claimed.

Federal Trade Minister Don Farrell confirmed on Sunday that the government was “very focused on critical minerals” ahead of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s meeting with President Donald Trump on October 20, telling Sky News Australia the government had been discussing a critical minerals deal with the US since “the day Donald Trump became President of the United States”.

But Nationals Leader David Littleproud said the fact the government had been unable to pass a deal 320 days into President Trump’s term “speaks volumes” about Labor’s approach to the relationship.
