Thousands of people have decried Australia's position on the Gaza conflict during marches around the nation, as scepticism grows over a Donald Trump-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Among the protesters were Australians back home after being detained in Israel for seeking to deliver aid to Gaza during a naval blockade.

They were among speakers to address the crowd in Sydney's centre on Sunday.

Juliet Lamont, who spent more than a month at sea with the Global Sumud Flotilla, reaching about 20 nautical miles off the Gaza coastline, said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese needed to distance the country from "the Trumpian bully-boy death cult".
