**Murder Investigation Launched After Watkins' Death in Prison**
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of Ian Watkins, the former frontman of the band Lostprophets, who was allegedly stabbed in prison. The incident occurred at HMP Wakefield on Saturday morning, prompting West Yorkshire Police to initiate a murder investigation.
Police were alerted to a serious assault at the prison at 9.39am. Officers found Watkins, aged 48, with severe injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two suspects, aged 25 and 43, are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
A statement from West Yorkshire Police confirmed the launch of the murder inquiry, stating, "Detectives have launched a murder investigation after the death of a man in HMP Wakefield. Officers were called by staff at the prison to reports of a serious assault on a prisoner."
Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence for multiple child sex offences, including rape and sexual assault of a child under 13. His crimes were described by the sentencing judge as "unprecedented in depravity," highlighting the significant risk he posed to the public.
In 2012, Watkins was arrested after police discovered evidence of his crimes during a drugs raid at his home. He pleaded guilty in 2013 to 13 charges related to child sexual abuse. While incarcerated, he received an additional 10-month sentence for possessing a mobile phone, which was deemed a serious violation given his history.
In a previous incident earlier this year, Watkins was taken hostage by three inmates at the same prison, where he was stabbed and beaten before being rescued by prison officers after approximately six hours.
The Prison Service has acknowledged the incident but stated they cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing. The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team is leading the investigation into Watkins' death, with enquiries still in progress.
