Two New Zealand nationals are facing life in prison after Border Force officers allegedly discovered 40 kilograms of cocaine in their luggage at Sydney Airport.
The accused drug smugglers, both aged 21, came close to pulling off their plan but were undone at the final hurdle when officers selected them for a routine luggage check.
Border Force officers picked out the men for inspection, leading to the discovery of the massive cocaine haul hidden in their bags.
The seizure represents a significant blow to international drug trafficking operations, with the street value of the drugs estimated at $13 million.
Both men are now in custody and facing serious drug trafficking charges that could result in life imprisonment if convicted.
