Title: Three Newfoundland Activists Released from Israeli Detention
AMMAN - Three activists from Newfoundland and Labrador have been released from Israeli detention and are on their way back to Canada. Sadie Mees, Devony Ellis, and Nikita Stapleton were part of a flotilla consisting of nine ships that aimed to deliver medical aid to Gaza and challenge the Israeli naval blockade.
The Gaza Freedom Flotilla group reported that the ships were intercepted by Israeli forces, leading to the detention of the activists at Ketzi'ot prison in Israel. Early this morning, the three women from St. John's were released and safely crossed into Amman, the capital of Jordan.
From Jordan, they are expected to return to Canada, although their exact arrival time remains uncertain. The three women were the last of six Canadian detainees to be released. Indigenous rights activist Mskwaasin Agnew returned to Toronto on Saturday afternoon, with other detainees anticipated to arrive back in Canada today.
The flotilla's mission was part of a broader effort to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza amid ongoing tensions in the region. The activists' release marks a significant moment for those involved in the flotilla and their supporters.
