DETROIT -- Jack Flaherty emptied the tank in the Detroit Tigers’ longest game of the year, throwing two scoreless extra innings that delayed but couldn’t prevent the end of their season.
Now comes a different kind of endurance test. He must navigate another unpredictable winter that will determine whether he returns to Detroit.
Flaherty’s final appearance came in the 13th and 14th innings of Friday’s 15-inning Game 5 loss to the Seattle Mariners . It looked like the game might end in the 13th when Flaherty walked the first two batters he faced, but instead, he became the last of three Tigers relievers to navigate into and out of trouble in extra innings, striking out Jorge Polanco and getting Eugenio Suárez to ground into a double play to extend the game.
