Bathurst 1000 runner-up Dave Reynolds says he couldn’t see “anything” in the dying stages of The Great Race on Sunday.

The Supercars veteran, who won Australian motorsport’s most iconic race in 2017, was right in the mix to snatch victory in the final few laps of what is already being hailed as the greatest Bathurst 1000 of all time, before finishing second behind Matt Payne.

With the later start time of 11.45am, Reynolds, Payne, James Golding and Cooper Murray were all still duking it out just after 6.40pm in wet and cloudy conditions that saw seven safety cars deployed and six pairings fail to finish the race due to either crashes or mechanical failures.

They were conditions that made it tough for the drivers to see where they were going, particularly over the top of Mount Panoram
