EAST LANSING – Asked about a specific play, Matt Gulbin struggled to recall it.
The Michigan State center rubbed his head while looking for more clarity.
“I don’t even remember what you’re talking about,” Gulbin said in a reaction that summarized the disappointment of the last three-plus hours.
It was a day to forget for the Spartans but a performance that must be addressed for the program to show any life moving forward as the heat ramps up on second-year coach Jonathan Smith. Michigan State (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) followed back-to-back defeats on the road with an embarrassing 38-13 loss against UCLA (2-4, 2-1) during homecoming on Saturday .
“Very surprised by it,” Smith said of an uninspired effort in a game the Spartans really needed. “Surprised that this performance looked the way it
