BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - As fall temperatures arrive, Mississippi drivers face an increased risk of deer-related collisions as the animals become more active and visible on roadways.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reminding drivers to take extra precautions during the autumn months when deer activity peaks.

Transportation officials emphasize that you should never veer for deer. If a deer runs in front of your vehicle, stay calm and brake firmly. Swerving can lead to more serious accidents, according to officials.

MDOT added that if you see one deer, expect more, since they often travel in groups.
